Inspecting the Drive Chain Slack

Check the drive chain slack at several points along the chain. If the slack is not constant at all points, some links may be kinked and binding.

Have the chain inspected by your dealer.

  • Shift the transmission to Neutral. Stop the engine.
  • Place your vehicle on its side stand on a firm, level surface.
  • Pull the upper half of the drive chain up and check the chain slack between the drive chain and swing-arm at the end of the drive chain slider.
  • Drive chain slack:

    50 - 55 mm (2.0 - 2.2 in)

  • Do not ride your vehicle if the slack exceeds 60 mm (2.4 in).

  • Roll the vehicle forward and check that the chain moves smoothly.
  • Inspect the sprockets.
  • Clean and lubricate the drive chain.
